Pompeii Skip the Line Tickets: Which Grade Your Tour from Rome Includes

Last reviewed August 2026

Pompeii skip the line tickets are what eleven of the twelve tours from Rome say they include, and the phrase tells you nothing about which ticket you will hold. Since 12 January 2026 the park sells two day tickets: Pompeii+ at €25 with the suburban villas, and Pompeii express at €20 without them. Skip-the-line describes the group gate, not the grade. This page reads the inclusion text of every Rome listing we compare, names the one that states its grade, the one that sells a villas upgrade and the one that says outright the villas are excluded, and explains what to do if the Villa of the Mysteries is on your list. Ticket facts checked on pompeiisites.org on 29 August 2026.

Quick answer Two ticket grades, one that names its grade, and the €8 way to fix a wrong one

Every Pompeii tour from Rome we compare includes a park ticket, and only one of the twelve says which. The Askos two-site day names the €20 Pompeii Express ticket in writing. ItaliaTours' self-guided train day sells a Villas included upgrade, and inStazione's guided train day lists the suburban villas ticket as not included. The other nine say skip-the-line or entry ticket and nothing more. Since no coach itinerary walks to the Herculaneum Gate, assume the express grade unless the listing says otherwise, and if the Villa of the Mysteries matters, book the one tour that leaves you five hours inside and pay for the upgrade.

Key takeaways

  • €25 Pompeii+ covers the city and the suburban villas; €20 Pompeii express covers the city only, since 12 January 2026
  • Only the Pompeii and Herculaneum train day prints its grade: Pompeii Express
  • The self-guided train day is the one listing that sells the villas as an upgrade
  • A €8 add-on, card only, at the Herculaneum Gate turns an express ticket into the villas route on the day
  • Skip-the-line means the group entrance; how long each tour spends inside matters more than the phrase

The Two Tickets the Park Sells

The Archaeological Park of Pompeii restructured its ticketing on 12 January 2026. The day ticket split into two grades, priced €5 apart, and the difference is a route rather than a queue. Figures below are from the park's own timetables and tickets page, checked on 29 August 2026.

Everything a guided walk covers, the Forum, the Stabian Baths, the thermopolia, the Lupanare, the casts in the granary, is inside the €20 ticket. The €25 ticket adds the route out through the Herculaneum Gate along the Street of the Tombs to the villas outside the walls, and the Villa of the Mysteries with its red-ground fresco cycle is the reason anyone pays the difference.

Both grades are personal, carry the holder's name, and admit once with no exit and re-entry. The park caps the site at 20,000 entries a day. Between 16 March and 14 October the 09:00 to 13:00 window takes 15,000 admissions of which only 3,000 are Pompeii+, and the 13:00 to 17:30 window takes 5,000 of which 2,000 are Pompeii+. The villas quota sells out first in the morning, which matters if you are buying your own ticket and matters not at all if a tour is buying it for you. The official online sale is through vivaticket, linked from pompeiisites.org; that link carries no commission and neither does any other ticket-office link on this site.

What Skip the Line Means, and What It Does Not

Tour groups enter Pompeii through a dedicated group access with pre-issued tickets, so the guide walks you past the individual ticket windows. That is the whole of the promise. It has three limits worth knowing before you value it.

First, since tickets became nominative and capped, an individual with a booked slot from vivaticket also walks past the ticket window; the queue that skip-the-line skips is the walk-up queue, which in summer is real and in winter is short. Second, the security check at the gate applies to groups too, and the Sorrento combo listing warns of delays there in its own text. Third, the phrase says nothing about the grade. A guide holding express tickets skips the same line as a guide holding Pompeii+.

So when a listing offers Pompeii skip the line tickets, read the inclusion list for a second phrase: Express, Villas, Suburban. That is where the information is.

Every Rome Tour's Ticket Wording, Read Line by Line

We copied the ticket line from the inclusion list of each of the twelve Pompeii tours from Rome we compare, on the operators' listings on 29 August 2026, and put beside it what that wording implies. Where the listing says nothing about the grade, the implied column reads express, because no coach or train itinerary here schedules the villas route and the park's cheaper ticket is the one operators buy for a two-hour walk.

Read as a group, the twelve listings split three ways. One names its grade. Two tell you indirectly, one by selling the villas as a paid option and one by listing the suburban villas ticket under not included. Nine use skip-the-line or entry ticket without a grade. None claims Pompeii+.

That is not a trick so much as an accurate description of what the tours do. A two-hour guided walk from Porta Marina covers the Forum, a bath complex, a house or two and the casts, and turns round well before the Herculaneum Gate. The villas would go unused. It becomes a problem in two cases: when you assumed the dearer tour bought the dearer ticket, and when you planned to stay inside after the guide leaves. The same audit sits in short form on the homepage, next to the table of hours on site.

If You Want the Villa of the Mysteries

You have three routes from Rome, and only one of them is a guided tour.

The first is the self-guided high-speed train day with the Villas included upgrade ticked at checkout. It is the only Rome listing that sells Pompeii+ in any form, and because it leaves you about five hours inside, the fifteen-minute walk out to the villa and back fits. Ground assistance only; there is no guide.

The second is the inStazione guided day, which lets you stay inside after the two-hour walk and states plainly that the suburban villas ticket is not included. Stay on, walk to Porta Ercolano, and buy the €8 add-on at the start of the route. Card only, no cash desk, and the route closes with last entry at 15:30 in winter and 17:30 in summer, so the 07:40 train option is the one that leaves room.

The third is to go yourself: high-speed train to Naples, Circumvesuviana to Pompei Villa dei Misteri, a Pompeii+ ticket booked on vivaticket for an afternoon slot where the quota is 2,000 rather than 3,000 of a much bigger window. The DIY day is costed on the homepage. In money terms, €20 plus €8 at the gate is €28 against €25 bought as Pompeii+ upfront, so deciding at home is three euros cheaper than deciding at the gate.

Which Ticket Situation Is Yours

If You booked a coach combo or any tour with a 1.5 to 2.5 hour walk

Assume the €20 express grade. The villas are not on the itinerary and the ticket would not reach them anyway

If You want the Villa of the Mysteries with the least fuss

The self-guided train day with the Villas included upgrade

If You want a guide and the villa

The inStazione train day on the 07:40 option, then the €8 add-on at Porta Ercolano after the walk

If You want to know your grade before paying

The Askos two-site day prints it: Pompeii Express, plus a €16 Herculaneum ticket

If You are an EU citizen aged 18 to 24 buying your own ticket

€2 at either grade, with the passport itself at the gate

If Your only day is a first Sunday

Entry is free and unbooked; the queue is the price

Buying Your Own: In Advance or at the Gate

If no tour is involved, buy in advance for one reason: the grade you want can sell out while the other stays on sale. In the summer morning window 12,000 express places sit beside 3,000 Pompeii+, so a walk-up at 11:00 in July may find express only. Winter days, with last entry at 15:30, rarely hit the cap.

The ticket office sells at the gate too, and the first Sunday of every month is free with direct access, but a walk-up on a capped day is a gamble that a €20 booking removes. Resellers rank above the park in search and add a service fee to a ticket the park sells directly; several still print the pre-January price structure, so check the grade before the price.

One more thing your ticket buys: free entry within 30 days to the Volcei museum at Buccino, the Castle of Lettere, the Longola park at Poggiomarino and the Terzigno museum, none of which appear on a tour itinerary.

Pompeii Skip the Line Tickets: Questions

What is the best ticket to buy for Pompeii?

Pompeii+ at €25 if the Villa of the Mysteries is part of the visit, because the €20 express ticket leaves it out and adding it at the gate costs €8 more. Pompeii express at €20 if a two or three hour walk inside the walls is the whole plan, which is what every guided tour from Rome delivers.

Do Pompeii skip the line tickets include the Villa of the Mysteries?

Skip-the-line is a gate, not a grade, so it depends on the ticket behind the phrase. On the twelve Rome tours we compare, none states Pompeii+; one names Pompeii Express, one sells a villas upgrade and one lists the villas ticket as not included.

Where can I buy official tickets for Pompeii?

Through vivaticket, which is the park's own sales channel linked from pompeiisites.org, with no markup. Tour operators buy the group tickets for you. We do not put affiliate parameters on ticket-office links.

Is it worth buying Pompeii tickets in advance?

Between 16 March and 14 October, yes: the park caps entries at 20,000 a day and the morning Pompeii+ quota is 3,000, so the grade you want can sell out first. In winter the cap rarely binds. On a tour the operator books for you.

Can I book tickets for Pompeii in advance and still change my ticket grade?

An express ticket can be upgraded on the day at Porta Ercolano for €8, card payment only, before last entry to the villas route at 15:30 in winter or 17:30 in summer. There is no downgrade and no re-entry, so choose before you walk past the gate.

Which Pompeii tour from Rome includes the Pompeii+ ticket?

None includes it by default. The self-guided high-speed train day sells a Villas included upgrade at checkout, and it is the only one that leaves enough time inside to use it.

The rule fits in one line: skip-the-line is how you enter, express or Pompeii+ is what you can reach once inside, and eleven of twelve listings tell you only the first. Every tour compared on this site has its ticket line printed on its page, and the table of hours on site tells you whether a better ticket would have mattered.
