Rome to Pompeii by Train: Every Route and Fare Compared (2026)

Last reviewed August 2026

The Rome to Pompeii train is really two trains. A Frecciarossa or Italo takes you from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale in about seventy minutes, and a local line takes you the last 22 kilometres to the gate. Except on Sundays, when one Frecciarossa does the whole thing in 1 h 47. Add the fare classes, a same-day-return discount most visitors never see, one service that ends on 18 October 2026 and another suspended from 1 October 2026, and the timetable pages stop being enough. This is the whole route as it stands on 29 August 2026, with a clock-time day and what it costs against the tours that sell the same journey.

Quick answer The route, the journey time, the fare floor and what the tour version costs

Take a high-speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale (first Trenitalia departure 07:00, Italo from €14.90 on promo fares), walk downstairs to Napoli Garibaldi and ride the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Villa dei Misteri for €3.30. Door to door is about 2 h 15 to 2 h 30, and you reach Porta Marina around 09:15. On Sundays a direct Frecciarossa leaves Termini at 08:53 and arrives at Pompei at 10:40. Budget €56 to €61 per person for the whole day on your own, or $149 for the self-guided train day that bundles the same trains with a coach transfer and the park ticket.

Key takeaways

  • Frecciarossa Rome to Naples: departures 07:00 to 22:35, more than 100 connections a day; Italo's fastest run is 1 h 13
  • Same-day return on Trenitalia's A/R in giornata fare takes 30% off Sunday to Friday and 50% off on Saturday
  • Naples to the gate: Circumvesuviana €3.30 to Villa dei Misteri, or Regionale €4.10 plus the €1.50 Pompei Link bus
  • Sunday only: the direct FR 9693 does Termini to Pompei in 1 h 47, back at 20:55
  • The self-guided train day is the tour that copies this route; a coach day is cheaper but spends six hours on the A1

Every Rome to Pompeii Train Route, Compared

Four rail routes actually run between Rome and the ruins, and they differ in changes, in where they leave you, and in whether they exist on the day you travel. The table reads each one from Trenitalia's, Italo's and EAV's own pages on 29 August 2026, with the fare floor where an operator publishes one and "search only" where it does not. The times are from the Termini departure to the park gate, not just the train.

The first row is the default and the one every forum thread describes. It is also the route where the numbers are firmest, because both legs have a published fare. Pick the second when you are carrying a suitcase (the Circumvesuviana has no luggage space), the third when you want one ticket and a seat with air conditioning as far as the gate, and the fourth whenever your Pompeii day happens to fall on a Sunday.

The last row is not a train route in the strict sense; it is the tour that sells this route with a coach from Naples and the park ticket included, and it belongs in the table because the price comparison only makes sense with it there. The train-based tours on the homepage comparison all start from the same 70-minute Frecciarossa leg.

Which Train Day Suits You

If You want the cheapest day and can book a week ahead

Italo or Trenitalia promo fares to Naples, then the Circumvesuviana; about €56 to €61 all in with the €20 express ticket

If Your Pompeii day is a Sunday

The direct FR 9693 at 08:53, back on FR 9568 at 18:40; no change at Naples

If You are travelling on a Saturday and returning the same evening

Trenitalia's A/R in giornata fare, which takes 50% off the return on Saturdays

If You have luggage or need step-free access

Regionale to Pompei FS and the Pompei Link bus; Napoli Garibaldi's Circumvesuviana platforms are not step-free

If You want the trains booked for you and a guide waiting

The guided fast-train tour at $191, 2 h guided and then stay inside as long as you like

If You sleep in Naples rather than Rome

The calculation is different, and the Pompeii tours from Naples site covers that leg in detail

Frecciarossa and Italo Fares: What the Classes Mean

Trenitalia does not publish a from-price for Rome to Naples anywhere on its route page; every figure you see online for a Frecciarossa on this corridor came out of somebody's search on some date. Italo does publish one, €14.90, and its fastest run is 1 h 13. What Trenitalia does publish is the rulebook for its three fare classes, and that rulebook decides what you actually pay.

The table condenses the LeFrecce fare-information page as it read on 29 August 2026.

Super EconomyDeepest discount, several levelsNoneNo, unless you add the paid tiRimborso optionAt least a week ahead
A/R in giornata−30% Sunday to Friday, −50% on Saturday, on the returnNo date changeNoMidnight of the 3rd day before

The class that matters for a day trip is the last row. A/R in giornata is Trenitalia's same-day-return fare on all Frecce: 30% off Sunday to Friday, 50% off on a Saturday, provided you go out and come back on the same calendar day and buy by midnight three days before. It is the honest lever for this route and it appears on none of the booking-site pages that rank for the search. The catch is the same as Super Economy: no date change, no refund, so a rained-off day is a lost fare.

Italo runs Low Cost, Economy and Flex families with the same shape (cheap and rigid, or dear and changeable). Its site timed out three times while we checked the rules, so confirm them on the booking screen before you commit.

One rule of thumb covers all of it. Booking a week out with fixed plans, take the deepest discount and accept the rigidity. Booking the night before, the walk-up Base fare is whatever the search shows for that train, and no page can tell you the number in advance. Both operators price by train, so the 07:00 and the 07:50 can differ by a wide margin on the same morning; look at three departures, not one.

The Naples Leg: Circumvesuviana or Regionale plus Pompei Link

Everything from Naples onward runs on the Unico Campania tariff, and Pompei sits in band NA3. Two operators cover it and they leave you at different gates, which is the detail that costs newcomers twenty minutes. Fares below are from the Tariffa 41/5 schedule valid from 14 July 2026 and from Trenitalia's Pompei Link page.

The Circumvesuviana is the route the Naples-based guides describe stop by stop, so here is only what a Rome-based traveller needs. Follow the signs for Circumvesuviana inside Napoli Centrale, go down the stairs (there is no lift on that route, which is why the Regionale wins for wheelchairs and suitcases), buy the NA3 ticket at the EAV window or machine, and take any train marked Sorrento. Get off at Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri. You can walk from that station to the ruins: leave the station, turn right, and the Porta Marina ticket office is in front of you within a hundred metres.

The Regionale route needs one extra step. Buy the ticket with "Pompei Scavi" as the destination and it includes the Pompei Link bus, which runs 15 times each way, 08:45 to 17:40 outbound and 08:55 to 17:50 back. Miss the 17:50 and it is a taxi or a 25-minute walk to the FS station.

The Sunday Direct Frecciarossa

There is a direct train from Rome to Pompei, and it runs once a week. FR 9693 leaves Roma Termini at 08:53, calls at Napoli Centrale 10:03 to 10:13, and arrives at Pompei at 10:40, so 1 h 47 for the whole thing. The return, FR 9568, leaves Pompei at 18:40 and reaches Termini at 20:55. Trenitalia lists it on its Roma-Pompei page as a Sunday service; the italia.it write-up calls it non-stop, which it is not, and a Rough Guides page still says every third Sunday, which was the launch pattern and is no longer the timetable.

It arrives at the Trenitalia station, not Villa dei Misteri, so the €1.50 Pompei Link bus covers the last fifteen minutes to the gate and you are inside by about 11:00. With last entry at 17:30 in summer and the return at 18:40, that is about seven hours in and around the site, more than any other way of doing the day from Rome. The fare is search-only; the forum figure of about €30 each way is one traveller's booking, not a tariff.

Two Sunday warnings. The first Sunday of every month is Domenica al Museo, free entry and the biggest crowds of the month. And a Sunday train means a Sunday A/R in giornata discount of 30%, not the Saturday 50%.

A Clock-Time Train Day from Termini

This is the day as the timetables allow it on a summer weekday, built from Trenitalia's first Rome departure of 07:00, a 40-minute Circumvesuviana ride and the park's summer last entry of 17:30. Winter compresses the middle: last entry moves to 15:30 and the site closes at 17:00, which leaves about four hours inside instead of five or six.

TimeWhere you areWhat happens
06:40Roma TerminiPlatforms are announced late; the Frecce leave from the far end, so allow ten minutes to walk

16:45Napoli CentraleAny Frecciarossa or Italo you hold a ticket for; the last Naples departures are after 20:00
18:00 to 20:00Roma TerminiBack for dinner

Two things stretch this. Trains from Naples back to Rome in the late afternoon are the ones business travellers use, so the 17:00 to 18:30 departures sell out first and price highest; hold a ticket for one before you leave Rome. And the Circumvesuviana has no reserved seats and occasional strikes, so a 16:00 departure from Villa dei Misteri for a 17:15 Frecciarossa is comfortable and a 16:30 departure is not.

The distance and time guide sets these door-to-door minutes against the coach and the car.

What the Train Day Costs Against the Tours

The honest comparison is the whole day per person, both directions, with the park ticket in. The low column uses Italo's published €14.90 promo both ways, which is the only citable floor for the high-speed leg; the walk-up column leaves the Frecciarossa Base fare as a live search, because no source publishes it. The tour prices are the lowest adult "from" prices on the listings on 29 August 2026.

Hours on site, summer5 to 65 to 6About 5, self-guided2, guided

Read across the bottom rows and the trade is clear. On your own you pay €56 to €61 and keep five or six hours in the ruins. The self-guided train day costs about two and a half times that and gives you the same hours, the same trains, a coach from Naples instead of the Circumvesuviana, the ticket handled, and somebody to call if the train is late (though the listing warns that train delays cut site time, not the tour length). The $80 coach day is cheaper than either in cash and dearest in hours: roughly three hours each way on the A1 and two guided hours at Pompeii. The bus versus train guide runs that arithmetic for every coach listing.

What the DIY total does not include is the villa route. The €20 express ticket leaves out the Villa of the Mysteries; that needs the €25 Pompeii+ grade, whose morning quota is 3,000 of 15,000 admissions and sells out first. The ticket grades are worth reading before you buy, whichever column you end up in.

Rome to Pompeii by Train: Common Questions

Is there a direct train from Rome to Pompei?

Yes, on Sundays only. FR 9693 leaves Roma Termini at 08:53 and arrives at Pompei at 10:40 after one stop at Napoli Centrale; FR 9568 returns at 18:40, arriving in Rome at 20:55. Every other day you change at Naples, or take the daily FrecciaLink coach combination until 18 October 2026. The routes table sets them side by side.

How long is the train ride from Rome to Pompeii?

About seventy minutes to Naples on a Frecciarossa (Italo's fastest is 1 h 13), then 35 to 40 minutes on the Circumvesuviana, plus the change. Door to door from Termini to the Porta Marina gate is 2 h 15 to 2 h 30, and the Sunday direct train is 1 h 47 plus a fifteen-minute bus.

How much is the train from Rome to Pompeii?

The high-speed leg is search-only on Trenitalia; Italo publishes a from-price of €14.90. The Circumvesuviana from Naples is €3.30 and the Regionale plus Pompei Link is €5.60. Promo fares both ways, the local train and the €20 express park ticket come to about €56 to €61 per person, which the cost table breaks down.

What time is the first train from Rome to Naples?

Trenitalia's own Rome to Naples page lists the first Frecciarossa at 07:00, with departures until 22:35. Guides that say six o'clock are quoting an older timetable; check Italo's live timetable for its first train on your date. Leaving at 07:00 puts you at Porta Marina around 09:15.

Can you walk from Pompeii train station to the ruins?

From Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri, yes: about a hundred metres to the Porta Marina ticket office. From the Trenitalia station in the modern town it is a 25-minute walk, which is what the €1.50 Pompei Link bus is for, running 15 times a day between 08:45 and 17:50.

Do I need to book Rome to Pompeii train tickets in advance?

The high-speed leg, yes, if you want a discount: Super Economy needs about a week, A/R in giornata three days, Economy two. The Circumvesuviana and Regionale are walk-up tickets. The park ticket is the one to book first: it is nominative and capped at 20,000 a day.

Is the train better than a coach tour from Rome?

For hours in the ruins, yes: five or six against two. For cash, the $80 coach day is close to the DIY train total once you add a guide, and it needs no planning. The bus versus train guide lays out the decision.

The train wins this route on time and it wins on cash if you book a week out. Two trains, one change downstairs at Naples, and a gate a hundred metres from the platform. Pay for the tour version when you want the trains and the ticket handled and a guide inside; the Pompeii tours from Rome catalogue and its comparison of every way from Rome show which version of the day that is.
