Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano or Sorrento Day Trip from Rome
This Pompeii Positano Amalfi Coast day trip from Rome runs the day backwards from every other coach combination on this site: coast in the morning, Pompeii in the afternoon, two guided hours with an archaeologist when the site is emptying rather than filling. The Tour Guy sells it with a choice at checkout — Positano, the most popular option, or Sorrento — and a limoncello tasting at a producer on the way. At $161 it is the most expensive coach day among the Pompeii tours from Rome compared here, and with 307 reviews at a 4.6 it is also the least-tested of the big-coach days.

Quick answer Why the ruins come last, what Positano and Sorrento each cost you in time, and the passport rule
$161 buys a coach from Piazzale Flaminio, a limoncello tasting and a photo stop on the coast, 1.5 hours of free time in Positano or Sorrento, and then two hours in Pompeii with an archaeologist on a timed-entry ticket in the afternoon. Lunch is not included, everyone carries government ID and a passport copy, and the grade of the Pompeii ticket is unstated — assume the €20 express. It is the only coast day here with two guided hours in the ruins; the $126 City Wonders Positano day gives ninety minutes and a longer stay in the town.
Key takeaways
- Pompeii last, at about half past two: quieter than the ten o'clock crush the other coach days walk into
- Ninety minutes in Positano — half an hour less than the City Wonders day, plus the photo stop and tasting
- The Positano option puts fifteen minutes each way in vans on the winding road; carsick travellers pick Sorrento
- Up to 50 on the coach — the largest stated group on this site
- ID for every guest and a passport copy, by the listing's own instruction
What the Day Covers
The coast in the morning
The coach leaves Piazzale Flaminio early — one August 2026 reviewer put it at a quarter past seven — and drives three hours south to the Amalfi Coast. The first stop is the listing's thirty-minute photo stop and scenic drive on the coast, and the reviews put the limoncello tasting at a local producer here too, before the group splits. On the Positano option a van takes you the last fifteen minutes down into the town, because the coach cannot; the Sorrento option keeps the coach and the listing calls it the best-value choice for its shorter transfer.
Free time is an hour and a half in either town. In Positano that is the maze of stairs from the road to the beach, a takeaway sandwich, a gelato and — as a reviewer from the United States managed on 16 August 2026 — a quick swim before the climb back. In Sorrento it is flat piazzas and wide views over the Bay of Naples. The same reviewer wished for two hours in Positano and warned that the winding road up and down is hard on anyone who gets carsick; that is the listing's own case for the Sorrento option.
The two options are exclusive. Positano is not included on the Sorrento option and Sorrento is not included on the Positano one, and the listing states that in its inclusion list twice. After the free time there is a further ninety minutes of scenic driving along the coast, back towards the plain.
Pompeii in the afternoon
The coach reaches Pompeii around the middle of the afternoon, and the listing gives the site two hours with an archaeologist guide on a timed-entry ticket — the timed slot is what replaces the queue, in the listing's words a straight walk in. Two hours is the same as the $80 Vesuvius day and half an hour more than the City Wonders coast days give.
The afternoon timing is the quiet argument for this tour. Between 16 March and 14 October the park admits up to 15,000 people in the morning window and 5,000 after one o'clock, so a group walking in at half past two is entering as the morning coaches leave — the homepage sets out the slot quotas. Two reviewers in July and August 2026 praised the same Pompeii guide by name for keeping the group in the shade, which in an August afternoon matters as much as the commentary. The route is the standard one — original stone streets past homes, shops and public squares, the Forum against Vesuvius — and it stays inside the walls. The listing warns that the itinerary may run in reverse on occasion, in which case Pompeii comes first and the coast last.
The Ticket Question
Timed entry, grade unstated
The inclusion reads "Timed entry to Pompeii Archaeological Park". Timed describes the slot, not the ticket. Since 12 January 2026 the park sells two day tickets — Pompeii+ at €25, which adds the suburban villas including the Villa of the Mysteries, and Pompeii express at €20 for the ancient city only — and the listing does not say which. Every listing on this site that names its grade names the express; the homepage audit records this one among those that do not.
On a two-hour guided route that never leaves the walls, and with a coach bound for Rome afterwards, the grade makes no difference to the day. The €8 villas add-on at the Herculaneum Gate is for people staying on, and nobody on this tour is. If the villa is the point, the self-guided train day sells a villas-included upgrade.
What this listing is strict about is identity. The park's tickets are nominative and the operator goes further than any other on the site: a valid government-issued ID for every guest including children, and a copy of the passport identification page carried by everyone. The what-to-bring list puts passport or ID card first and cash second. Sort both the night before.
The grades side by side, from the park's own tariff of 12 January 2026, with what each would change on this particular itinerary — which, on a coach day with a fixed departure, is very little.
| Ticket | Price | Covers | What it means on this tour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pompeii+ | €25.00 | Ancient city plus the suburban villas (Villa of the Mysteries, Villa of Diomedes), Villa Regina at Boscoreale and the shuttle | Nothing extra: the two-hour afternoon route stays inside the walls |
| Pompeii express | €20.00 | Ancient city only | The likely grade; matches every listing here that does name one |
| Suburban-villas add-on | €8.00, card only | Sold at the Herculaneum Gate to express holders | Not reachable — the coach leaves for Rome when the guide finishes |
Who This Suits
Book it if
You want the coast and two full guided hours in Pompeii, not ninety minutes, and you like the idea of walking the ruins as the crowds thin. No other coast day from Rome on this site gives two hours with an archaeologist, and none puts them in the afternoon. The choice at checkout is also useful: Positano for the photographs, Sorrento for a flat town and a shorter, straighter transfer.
The reviews from July and August 2026 come back to two things — guides on the coach who talk all the way down about Rome and the region, and a driver who handled the Positano road and the streets of Naples without drama. Families travel on it; the listing's rule that all children must be seated and its offer of car seats at 72 hours' notice are written for them.
Look elsewhere if
Price is the deciding factor. The City Wonders Positano day is $35 less for the same two towns in the opposite order, with two hours in Positano instead of ninety minutes and thirty minutes less in Pompeii. The Sorrento day at $97 gives two hours in the town and a tasting for $64 less. Both have thousands more reviews behind them.
Anyone in the party has a heart condition, limited mobility or low fitness — the listing rules all three out in its own words, and Positano's stairs are the reason. And if you would rather not spend six and a half hours on a coach for four and a half at the destinations, the coach-or-train question on the homepage is the place to start; the train days reach Pompeii in about an hour and forty minutes each way but none of them goes to the coast.
The Day by the Clock
Where twelve and a half hours go
The operator lists a duration for every leg of the Positano option and names the meeting point, but the departure time appears at checkout; this timeline uses the quarter-past-seven start an August 2026 reviewer reported and adds the listed legs in order. The Sorrento option drops the two van legs and shortens the transfer. The listed legs total twelve hours twenty minutes, which is the listing's twelve and a half.
| Time | Where | Listed duration | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 07:15 | Piazzale Flaminio, 20 | — | Early start; ID and passport copy checked |
| 07:15 - 10:15 | A1 and A3 to the coast | 3 hours | Guide's commentary on the coach |
| 10:15 | Amalfi Coast photo stop | 30 minutes | Scenic stop; reviewers place the limoncello tasting here |
| 10:45 | Van down to Positano | 15 minutes | Sorrento option stays on the coach |
| 11:00 | Positano, free time | 1.5 hours | Stairs to the beach, food at your own cost |
| 12:30 | Van back up | 15 minutes | The winding road again |
| 12:45 | Amalfi Coast, scenic drive | 1.5 hours | Views from the coach on the way to the plain |
| 14:15 | Coach to Pompeii | 20 minutes | To the timed-entry gate |
| 14:35 | Pompeii, guided | 2 hours | Archaeologist guide, afternoon slot |
| 16:35 | A3 and A1 to Rome | 3 hours | Evening return |
| 19:35 | Piazzale Flaminio, 20 | — | Twelve hours twenty by the legs |
Reading the timeline
Six and a half hours of coach and van, two hours of ruins, an hour and a half in the town, two hours of coastal scenery from a window, a photo stop and a tasting. Against the City Wonders Positano day the trade is exact: thirty minutes more in Pompeii, thirty minutes less in Positano, the ruins in the afternoon instead of the morning, and $35. Against the Vesuvius day it is the coast instead of the volcano for double the price.
Two listing notes shape the practical day. There is free time to buy food, but no lunch stop as such — eat in Positano or Sorrento, because the next chance is Pompeii's exit at half past four. And the operator asks for cash on the packing list, which on this coast means the beach-side takeaways and the producer's shop rather than the tasting itself.
Questions About This Tour
Why does this tour visit Pompeii in the afternoon?
The listing runs the coast first and Pompeii last, with two guided hours from about half past two on a timed-entry ticket. The afternoon window admits far fewer people than the morning one, so the site is quieter; the timeline shows the order, and the listing warns it may occasionally run in reverse.
Positano or Sorrento — which option should I choose?
Positano is the listing's most popular option and the one for the photographs, reached by van on a winding road with stairs at the bottom. Sorrento is flat, closer, and the listing calls it the best-value choice. A reviewer in August 2026 advised anyone who gets carsick to take Sorrento. The booking card shows both.
How long is the tour inside Pompeii?
Two hours with an archaeologist guide — the same as the $80 Vesuvius day and thirty minutes more than either City Wonders coast combination. The route stays inside the walls; nothing reaches the suburban villas.
Which Pompeii ticket is included?
Timed entry to the archaeological park, grade not stated. Assume the €20 Pompeii express rather than the €25 Pompeii+; the difference is the villas outside the walls, which the guided route does not visit.
Do I need my passport?
A valid government-issued ID for every guest including children, and everyone must carry a copy of the passport identification page. The listing states both; the park's tickets are personal and checks happen at the gate.
Is lunch included?
No. The listing includes a limoncello tasting at a local producer and free time to buy food during the day; the practical window is the ninety minutes in Positano or Sorrento. Bring cash, which is on the operator's packing list.
What Travellers Said
We left around 7:15 AM, starting with a limoncello tasting and a quick photo stop overlooking the coast before dividing into Positano and Sorrento groups. I chose Positano and loved it! In Pompeii, our guide Sasha was informative and funny, and I enjoyed seeing the art, ruins and artifacts.
Our guide Mateo and our driver Gianpierro were great and the bus was very cool for the hot weather. Mateo was very knowledgeable about the area and overall history which made the day super interesting and fun!
Positano was busy but beautiful. Nice views, great food. It was hot in Pompeii, but Sacha was a great guide there. He made sure we had our shade time, so that we could get out of the sun from time to time. Very caring.
